Young People, Urban Cultures and Digital Networks. Emerging Practices in the Arts, Publishing and Music

Young entrepreneurs in urban and interactive environments are opening new opportunities for informal training and employment, according to this study coordinated by Néstor García Canclini, Francisco Cruces and Maritza Urteaga and published in the Colección Fundación Telefónica / Ariel.

Twenty researchers have taken part in this study, conducted in Mexico City and Madrid over the course of two years, and under the guidance of social anthropologist Néstor García Canclini, to gain a deeper understanding of the new forms and styles of cultural production among the youth, taking as a reference point the figure of the entrepreneur and trendsetter, as well as the relationship they maintain with the economic environment by engaging in what experts call “creative economy”.

To this end , the researchers physically lived in these urban youth environments, taking part first-hand in this production, following a new anthropological immersion approach. They lived with musicians, used ICT as fluently as their youngest collaborators, and maintained an extraordinarily fluent relationship with this world, not only on the digital networks, but also in specific physical spaces, such as Medialab-Prado Madrid or Colonia Condesa in Mexico City.
