Digital Sovereignty in Europe 2026
The Digital Sovereignty in Europe 2026 report is the first comprehensive survey of how Spanish citizens and businesses perceive the challenge of achieving European digital sovereignty. The study examines the views and concerns of Spanish citizens and businesses regarding the drive to strengthen Europe's digital autonomy. Although the concept of digital sovereignty remains relatively unfamiliar—only 29% of respondents say they have heard of it—its implications are a source of widespread concern across the population, regardless of age, gender or region.
Among the report's key findings, 86% of Spaniards believe that Europe should develop its own technologies in order to become more globally competitive, while 82% consider that Europe is highly or fairly dependent on technology companies from other countries. This dependence is a significant concern for the public. Sixty-nine per cent believe that Europe is falling behind the United States and China in technological development, and 62% think that this dependence could pose a threat to security.
